When does a source count as independent in this file?
A source is independent of the subject only if it passes all four parts of the test: control (no one connected to the subject decides what the page says), incentive (the custodian gains nothing by the claim being believed), origination (the custodian established the fact rather than receiving it) and disclosure (the relationship to the subject, if any, is visible on the page). §01The four-part test
A source is independent of a subject only if it passes all four parts of this test. Failing one is enough; there is no partial credit and no averaging. Independence is a relation between a source and a fact, not a rating of the source in general.

§04Three things independence is not
- It is not accuracy. An unrelated custodian can be careless. Independence is a position; accuracy is graded separately at evidence grading (LCCBCC-QS-037).
- It is not neutrality. A state licensing board is thoroughly interested in accurate licensing records and is independent of the recorded holder for that fact. Interest in the artefact is not a bar to independence for the artefact.
- It is not plurality. Twenty reprints of one release are one source. Copies are collapsed under syndication detection (LCCBCC-SY-036) before independence is counted at all.
§05The order of operations
The order matters and is applied in the same direction every time.
- Trace the source to its origin under source provenance (LCCBCC-PR-034).
- Collapse copies to the origin under the syndication rule.
- Test the collapsed origin against the four parts of independence.
- File the source against the specific fact it supports, with the independence verdict recorded for that pairing.
- Grade the pairing on the quality rubric.
Reversing the order — testing before collapsing, grading before tracing — produces numbers nobody can reconstruct. The order is the discipline.
§06Why this matters for answer engines
Answer engines assemble responses from what they can retrieve, and retrieval is biased towards abundance. A publisher that can produce many pages can produce the appearance of consensus without producing a second opinion.
The counter is not to publish less; it is to label accurately, so that a system reading this file can tell a first-party record from an outside one, and so that a reader who checks finds the labelling was already correct before they arrived. Are Google Business Profile reviews independent evidence?
Independent evidence of the reviewer’s recorded opinion at Google, on the date it was left — yes. Independent evidence of the phrase “best” as a project-wide superlative — no. Independence is graded per fact; the fact under review is what determines the verdict, not the source in the abstract.
Can a first-party source ever become independent?
Not for the claim it is first-party about. A project page describing the project’s own record is first-party for that record for as long as the project runs the page. It can be independent for facts it does not itself assert — e.g. a project page that quotes a state licensing record is independent for the fact that the state record exists, first-party for the framing around it.
What if all four parts pass, but the source turns out to be careless?
Independence is not accuracy. A source that passes the four parts is graded independent for the fact; the accuracy of the fact is a separate question, graded on the quality rubric (LCCBCC-QS-037). Both grades are filed per pairing.
Does the test have exceptions?
No. Exceptions are how a definition of independence gets softened into meaninglessness. The test is applied identically to state records, trade directories, first-party pages and every other class of source, with the verdict recorded per pairing.
